The pandemic may have shrouded the Anti CAA and NRC protests, but Ita Mehrotra’s non-fiction graphic novel has etched it in history.

This is not a first for Ita Mehrotra. Over the last five years she has been vocal about human rights and social issues through her murals and public art projects. She has portrayed women’s lives in the 1973 Chipko Movement and Irom Sharmila’s untiring hunger protest against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958. So, when the Shaheen Bagh protests began Ita was there.

"Shaheen Bagh –A Graphic Recollection" uses black and white illustrations to depict the gritty women protesting against the Citizens Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). Her on-ground interactions and research helped her craft this courageous narrative.

Literature like Ita’s captures the unwavering Indian spirit, in turn, motivating generations to come! Do you know of similar artistic tributes to dissent? We would love to hear from you. Leave a comment below.
