It is great to see a threefold rise in women military personnel’s in the last six years. With more avenues opening at a steady pace we have 9,118 women currently serving in the army, navy and air force. To break it down further the Indian army accounts for 6,807 women officers, 1,607 in the air force and 704 women officers in the navy. This excludes the medical wing which has been run by women for decades.
With a small headcount of 3,000 women back in 2014-15 the government has taken up measures to empower women. The Supreme Court decision in February 2020 ruled that women be considered for command roles and all women officers were entitled to permanent commission. This adds to the massive inclusion effort that was accelerated almost 5 years back. We salute these women!
