Scientists are calling it a miracle crop. Other than providing a sustainable livelihood to women in Rameswaram, seaweed is said to help reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions, reverse ocean acidification and improve the marine environment.

India being the world's third largest carbon polluter, our scientists and government officials are scampering around for solutions, and this microalgae is their star right now. The graceful women divers in their colourful sarees are turning green into gold. And the government has taken notice of their efforts by rewarding $85 million in subsidies over the next five years.

One bamboo raft, that is used to cultivate the microalgae, can produce up to 200 kilos (440 pounds) in around 45 days helping the women make around ₹ 20000 per month for their efforts. This weed is working hard with the industry estimated to reach USD 30.2 billion by 2025.

This is a marvellous example of the adaptive nature of these women. Building a brand new industry. Creating an “eco-miracle” that is here to save the day (and the Earth too).
